| Under 14 - 15th February 2008 |
Sunday 15th FEB saw a depleted U14 team travel to Peterborough to
face the Phantoms. With Cardiff missing five players through a combination
of international duty, holidays and suspension, the Devils were down
to just two lines for this match.
Cardiff started the stronger of the teams, as Peterborough took some
early penalties but as the period went on, Peterborough started to
get hold of what was a very scrappy first period, and started testing
James Whiting in goal.
It was with a Cardiff player in the box that Peterborough took the
lead. With the puck in deep in the Phantoms end, Cardiff pushed forward
too hard and left a player free behind them. A good pass out of the
zone found the Phantoms Peter Burai who went in one on one and finished
neatly to the top corner. The first period ended at 1-0 to the home
team.
The second period, Cardiff came out and played much better defensively,
really keeping Peterborough to the odd long range effort, but still
the Devils were finding it tough to put together good strong scoring
opportunities up front.
Ellis Price had the best opportunity of the second period, but had
two efforts blocked by a mixture of net minder and defensemen. End
of second period the score remained at 1-0.
The third period was to be Cardiff's best of the game. Coming out
early with some extended pressure from the forward line Joseff Lawrence,
Zak Shanahan and Myles Chapman who worked hard all night, really set
the tone for the remainder of the game.
As the clock ticked down, it looked like it wasn't to be Cardiff's
day but an attacking face-off with 1.35 left on the clock gave the
Devils an opportunity to pull their keeper and go with the extra skater.
A good face-off win allowed Cardiff to hold the puck deep in the Peterborough
end, and after strong work along the boards by Myles Chapman, who
managed to work the puck in front, Joseff Lawrence shot quickly on
the spin, beating the home net minder to the bottom corner with 1.21
left.
Cardiff still had a late chance with a power play in the last 45 seconds,
but just couldn't get the puck to net, with some good defending by
the Phantoms to finish off the game and hold onto a 1-1 tie. Cardiff
were frustrated after outshooting their opponents 27-14, but relieved
to get the tying goal.
