After our game and result against Bracknell last week it was the
first home game of the season and we were still only icing 13 players,
but we were looking for another solid performance and positive result.
The first period was a bit scrappy as both sides took turns to take
penalties and test their power play and power kill lines with chances
going to both sides, both net minders making important saves to keep
the scores level.
It took until late into the 1st period for the breakthrough to finally
come through on a Cardiff Power Play, Lee Duance took the puck out
of defence on a great drive to the Basinstoke net, with a neat pass
back to Luke Poretta, he took the chance to score the opening goal
(14.44) and finally beat the Basinstoke net minder.
The second goal for Cardiff came right at the end of the period on
a Short Handed play, CJ battled hard to win the puck and provide Ben
Davies with a pass to score (19.33).
After the break, Cardiff started well with a Power Play goal assisted
by Luke Poretta and scored by Jon Woolway (21.39) to make it 3 –0,
this lead was quickly cut as Basinstoke scored an Evan Handed goal
by Richard Woolhouse (21.55) assisted by numbers 12 & 19.
Cardiff then scored a succession of goals over the final 6 minutes
of the 2nd period, starting with a Power Play goal by CJ (34.22) assisted
by Luke Evans and Adam Wood. Cardiff were now dominating the game
and followed two Evan Handed goals, the first scored by Ben Davies
(36.04) after a shot on goal by Luke Evans, the second Evan Handed
goal was a great goal by Lee Duance (37.14) who whipped a wrist shot
into the top corner from a tight angle, assisted by CJ. Some good
chances followed, the best was a neat one two in front of goal by
Ben Davies and Luke Evans but the shot was wide, a great chance.
The final goal of the period was a screaming slap shot by Adam Wood
(59.33) with assists going to Ben Davies and CJ on the Power Play.
The Celts had a healthy six-goal lead going into the 3rd period.
The final period was littered with penalties, the Celts had one player
in the box serving a 10 minute misconduct, but then fans saw the penalty
box get a bit fuller when another 4 players were sent to join him.
The penalty kill that followed was well controlled by the Cardiff
players, including Chris Hart, Ben Norrish and Tom Evans who worked
hard not to allow Basinstoke to score their second. The period was
uneventful apart from an astounding slap shot from Ben Davies that
pinged off the crossbar!
Michael Crisp who had another solid performance made way for James
Hall to make some fine saves between the pipes and maintain the opposition
score at only 1.
Ben Davies scored all the final 3 goals with 2 in the final minute,
assists going to CJ (3) and Steve Newton (1).
